What is a home sleep test?

SLEEP TESTING 101

A home sleep test lets you monitor your sleep from the comfort of your own bedroom. Using a small sensor worn on your wrist and finger, the device gently tracks your blood oxygen levels, heart rate, and pulse patterns throughout the night, capturing the subtle changes in your body's rhythms as you sleep.

Unlike a lab-based sleep study, testing at home means you get to follow your normal routine and sleep in your own bed. Once your night's data is recorded, our sleep specialists carefully review and analyze the results to build a clear picture of what's happening while you rest.

This approach is especially effective for identifying obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), a common condition where breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep — often showing up as dips in oxygen levels and shifts in heart rate that the device is designed to pick up.

How to use your sleep test device

Follow these simple steps for an accurate and comfortable sleep test.

Open your kit and verify all components are present: the recording device, finger sensor, and USB charging cable.

Unbox the Device

Download the "Celeste+" App

Download and open the app and make sure it is updated to the latest version.

Enter the clinic setup code that we provide to you and your personal information which includes: first name, last name, date of birth, phone number, sex, height, and weight.

Input Required Information / Sign In

Put on the recording device (worn like a watch), connect the finger sensor to the recording device (if not done so already), and put the finger sensor on your index finger or thumb. Click the power button on the side of the device.

Get Device Setup

On the phone app, tap scan and it will search for nearby devices that are on. Click on the device once it comes up on the screen and click "connect".

Audio Settings

A popup will ask if you will allow access to your microphone to record breathing audio. Voices and noises recorded cannot be accessed by clinicians, only the audio signal and breathing events. It is not necessary, but it is recommended. If you allow microphone access, please keep your phone 1-2 feet away from your bed and reduce other noises, if possible.

Bedtime (start recording)

When you are ready to sleep, click "start recording". Keep your phone plugged in all night and within 15 feet of you (closer if audio is enabled).

Morning (end recording)

When you wake up, click end recording. Please keep the app open while the study is processed. A message will appear when it has successfully been processed. It will then automatically be sent to your clinic for analysis.

Repeat

Repeat steps 6 and 7 as many times as specified for your study to be completed.

Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI): 

The AHI is the standard measure of sleep apnea severity. Simply put, it's the number of breathing events you have per hour of sleep. In the example to the left, this patient averaged 7 breathing events per hour of sleep across the 4 nights of testing.

Mean Oxygen Saturation (SpO2): 

This is the average percentage of oxygen carried by your blood throughout the night.

Arousal Index: 

An arousal is a brief shift in your sleep state, a quick awakening or disruption you're usually not even aware of. The arousal index shows how many of these you have, on average, each hour of sleep. It's a marker of how fragmented or broken up your sleep is.

Average Total Sleep Time: 

This is the average time spent sleeping each night of sleep testing. 

Sleep Efficiency: 

Sleep efficiency shows what percentage of the time you spent in bed was actually spent sleeping. In the example to the left, the patient averaged 78.6% of each night sleeping.

Average Deep Sleep Time: 

Deep sleep plays a key role in physical recovery overnight. We generally aim for about 20% of total sleep time to be spent in deep sleep.

Average REM sleep Time: 

REM sleep plays a key role in memory, learning, and emotional recovery. We generally aim for about 25% of total sleep time to be spent in REM sleep.

SLEEP TEST

Apnea Hypopnea Index (AHI): 

The AHI is the standard measure of sleep apnea severity. Simply put, it's the number of breathing events you have per hour of sleep. In the example to the left, this patient averaged 7 breathing events per hour of sleep across the 4 nights of testing.

The AHI includes the two main types of breathing events, Apneas (total pause in breathing for at least 10 seconds), and hypopneas (significant reduction in breathing efficiency for at least 10 seconds). 

AHI = (Number of Apneas + Number of Hypopneas) / Hours of sleep

Impression: 

The impression summarizes the overall outcome of your sleep study. Your cumulative AHI places you into a severity category for sleep apnea. These categories are defined by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and are used and recognized worldwide:

 

Normal (No Sleep Apnea):              AHI 0-4.99

Mild Sleep Apnea:                           AHI 5-14.99

Moderate Sleep Apnea:                  AHI 15 - 29.99

Severe Sleep Apnea:                      AHI 30+

Summary Info Table: 

The results on the first page of your sleep report are averages calculated across all nights of testing (typically 4–6 nights). The Summary Table on the second page breaks down the results from each individual night. This is important because one unusual or "outlier" night can significantly skew the overall averages. If a particular night felt unusual or unlike your typical sleep, reviewing the individual nights may give a more accurate picture.

A few notes on the summary table:

1) AHI (3%) vs AHI (4%): AHI can be calculated using two different methods. AHI (3%) is the current, standard method recommended by the AASM. AHI (4%) is an older method that typically produces lower numbers. Note: the severity categories listed above apply specifically to AHI (3%).

2) RDI vs AHI: RDI (Respiratory Disturbance Index) is another measure of breathing events per hour of sleep, similar to AHI. The difference is that RDI also includes Respiratory Effort Related Arousals (RERAs) — a type of breathing event that the AASM considers optional to report. Because of this, RDI is typically slightly higher than AHI.

 

3) TST = Totals Sleep Time (Total time sleeping).

4) TRT = Total Recording Time (The total amount of time spent in bed, whether asleep or awake).
